Swimming in the Digital Pool October 14, 2009

What an exciting time this is for companies looking to increase their revenues while extracting additional value from their marketing budgets. All thanks to digital marketing.

Social media marketing, mobile marketing, search engine marketing – each specialty is undergoing rapid change. And what an exciting time for marketers to jump in the digital pool and navigate the wave of changes.

This writer is a newbie, of course, and still exploring the realm of search engine marketing. In addition to taking formal classes, the Phoenix chapter of the American Marketing Association is doing an outstanding job of providing workshops and monthly meetings on all things digital. So while I’m a newbie, I take comfort knowing that I’m not the only one.

Thanks to the combination of traditional marketing experience, formal SEM training, AMA programming, SEMPO resources, iMediaConnection.com, and books such as “The Social Media Bible,”1 it’s exciting to see how each area can complement the other. Not every digital (or traditional) tool applies to each organization’s objectives, sales channels and target audiences, but as a catalyst for revenue growth, it’s thrilling to have these new instruments with their inherent analytical tools as part of my overall repertoire.

“If the only tool you have is a hammer, you tend to see every problem as a nail.” – Abraham Maslow

Duet is the new name of Beatitudes DOAR – a nonprofit organization that offers free services to older adults in the Phoenix area. Why “Duet”? Because “everything we do comes down to one person helping another person – a ‘duet’ of service.”

With its new branding, Duet is launching a service area expansion into the West Valley, starting with Glendale and Peoria.

Duet is also hosting a fundraiser on Sunday, December 6, 2:30 pm at the Hyatt Gainey Ranch in Scottsdale. “The Poinsettia Tea” features scrumptious tea sandwiches, desserts and musical entertainment provided by the Phoenix Boys Choir.  Hope to see you there.

Late last week, I started an online course in Search Engine Marketing (SEM). My instructor is located in Australia and has students in 43 countries.

Yesterday, I attended an AMA/Phoenix sponsored workshop conducted by Sheila Kloefkorn of KEOMarketing.com. It was a valuable four-hour session on social media. Sheila is extremely knowledgeable on Internet marketing and web design and is an engaging presenter as well. In short time, she was able to bring together the octopus-like tentacles of SEO and social media into comprehension.

I look forward to implementing a truly integrated marketing program in the near future.

Wish me luck as I continue on my learning path.

Congratulations to all Maricopa County tax payers for saving $2.7 million in energy costs this past year. Special kudos to Jonce Walker, the county’s Sustainability Manager, whose “program has received wide support from various county divisions…”

Since the initial implementation, county officials list 23 of the intial 124 goals as completed. To date, the program includes:

  • “Green” janitorial services
  • Preferred parking for hybrid and alternative-fuel vehicles
  • Public transportation use incentives for county employees
  • LEED standards for new construction

As reported in the Arizona Republic, Walker notes that “a long-term byproduct of the program would be more efficiently run government.”

Inventure Group (best known in Phoenix for its Poore Brothers potato chips) and Jamba Juice announce a new venture to launch frozen fruit smoothie “kits” for home use in the first quarter of 2010.

According to Susan Shields, vice president for consumer products and licensing at  Jamba Juice, “The make-at-home smoothie is an emerging category and represents perhaps the most literal extension of the Jamba brand to date.”

Steve Sklar, Inventure Group’s senior vice president of marketing, explains, “Jamba has a powerful brand with broad consumer appeal and this relationship offers us both an opportunity to extend our respective core competencies in the development of a unique product line.”

This licensing agreement allows Jamba Juice to extend its line of consumer packaged goods through grocery stores. It also allows Inventure Group to leverage its investment in Rader Farms, a Washington-based producer of raspberries and blueberries.

Bring it on!  I, for one, look forward to adding this tasty, healthy treat to my shopping cart.
